California Schools Shine on Washington Monthly ’s 2021 College Rankings

Back to school!

Washington Monthly released its 2021 College Rankings and Stanford University topped the list. According to Forbes, “The Washington Monthly lists aim to measure the extent to which colleges and universities promote upward economic and social mobility, make new research discoveries and encourage social and democratic participation by their students.” In all, four California institutions (Stanford, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego and UC Davis) made the top 20. In addition, a separate list of liberal arts colleges saw Harvey Mudd College take the top spot.

“The pandemic has highlighted students’ concerns about affordability, social justice, student debt, and employment. Consequently, according to Washington Monthly editor-in chief Paul Glastris, this year’s methodology was modified to include the most robust measures of social mobility and community service available. ‘That’s what makes our rankings one-of-a-kind and of special interest not just to prospective students,’ he said, ‘but also policy makers who want to strengthen higher education’s public purpose.’”
